When I first met Colin, I immediately thought… no, thank you. I was planning to move to NYC anyways, and more importantly, I couldn’t imagine dating a younger guy.
We met in early 2016. I remembered this very clearly, because on NYE I threw a party and the next morning had about an inch of grime on my floor. I was left to clean it by myself, because the guy I was seeing at that time conveniently had to go and write. Yes, write. He was a comedian and writer. And in LA, everyone is a writer. It was one of those relationships full of extremes. Extreme highs and extreme lows, always guessing with a lot of excuses. And it was exhausting. We were going out off and on for about a year, and that day after NYE was when I had enough. I cleaned my place and decided to move on, literally and figuratively. I stopped answering his texts and started looking for a place in NYC.
About three weeks later, my friend invited me to a supper club event. Last minute, I decided to go. When I got there, I couldn’t find the place. It was like an artist community with multiple spaces and lofts. I walked quickly into a narrow pathway, and in front of me was a really cute guy grilling. I slowed down my pace. I was wearing all white with black OTK boots, and decided to do an awkward runway slow-mo walk. As you can see, I’m not good with the singles/dating scene.

He didn’t bother looking up at me and pointed in the direction of the event entrance. And that was it. I had a really good time at the event though. It was a communal dining experience, so I met a lot of cool people. Throughout the night, I saw glimpses of the grill guy running back and forth. He was one of the chefs that night. At the dessert course, I got up and started chatting with the event coordinators. Out of the corner of my eye, the grill guy walked up to me and handed me a dessert.

And he left. I was confused and giddy at the same time. And then one of the event hosts suggested that we should do an event together, but under one condition… I have to meet Colin. Who’s Colin?!
After the event, the hosts and chefs invited me to their post-event get-together at a nearby bar. Grill guy, Colin, went from his chef outfit to an all black outfit with boots. We all walked to the bar together and Colin was such a gentleman. He offered me his coat and made sure I had everything I needed. And that night I learned that he was 10 years younger than me. And I immediately thought… No thank you, grill guy.
Colin was very polite. He walked me home and asked if we could meet again tomorrow. I thought why not. The next night, Monday, I met up with him and one of the hosts from the supper club event for drinks. When I got there, Colin went from an all black outfit of yesterday to a shearling denim vest Abercrombie-ish look, and I thought…. oh no, your 10-years-younger-than-me look is showing.
I couldn’t get over the age thing, but he didn’t stop trying. After that Monday night, I left for New York Fashion Week. When I was in NYC, he was very sweet and we ended up talking everyday. He asked if we could grab dinner when I got back. A few days after I got back, we went to a Vietnamese restuarant in Downtown LA. This was actually the first time we had one-on-one time. At dinner, I learned that he worked at some of the best restaurants in the U.S. (he was at Melisse, a two-starred Michelin restaurant, for a long time) and his early memories of food was visiting the farmer’s markets with his mom. And that he only has fond memories of his mom, who passed away when he was 8 years old. We ended up talking all night, and went from talking to seeing each other every day. And everything was so easy. Easy as in no excuses, no guessing, no conditions. It just felt right. And 3 years later, we’re still here =)
I’m so happy I went to that supper club event three years ago. We’re celebrating our 3 year anniversary, and honestly, it feels like we’ve been together way longer than that. We’ve been through thick and thin (he was my anchor at my brother’s wedding), and I just can’t help but think how incredibly lucky I am to have such an amazing partner in life.
